The industry is involved in personal and corporate finance management as well as general and life insurance covers. It is also in the banking sector where people keep their money and get loans. Companies in the industry are involved in financial transaction, selling of financial assets like securities bonds, corporate papers and insurance. They are also involved in creating, purchasing and liquidating of financial securities as well as underwriting in insurance. The major insurance and finance companies in the world include; AIG, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase bank, Fidelity insurance, Goldman Sachs and the Industrial and commercial Bank of China (Bayar, 2014). Their contribution to the society is driven by the demand in their business activities. Their return on investment is huge such that people invest in them to get huge returns from their investments.
They have also employed many more people who either work for them directly or indirectly as parties to the industry. They also give back to the society through their major corporate social responsibilities like educational funds to the needy, free health facilitations and other random acts of giving back to the society. As a multi trillion dollar industry, the Finance and Insurance industry pays back taxes in terms of billions to the governments. They are known as one of the biggest industries in terms of being taxed either directly through corporate taxes or indirectly. It aims at inclusion of the indigenous communities through the corporate social responsibilities like giving free medical checkups to indigenous communities and educating their children through scholarships. The bodies involved in their regulations include the central bank or federal bank, the association of insurance providers and the Bankers association (Dixon and Hardin, 2014). The general public views it as a rather greedy industry.
Their interest rates are high and this creates an impression to the public of an industry that is in for their selfish interest of accumulating profits. There are over 10 million people involved in the industry. The profession has accountants, finance managers, insurers, agents, underwriters, brokers and bankers. The industry has grown since its inception. In fact, as part of the service industry they drive the economy. Its revenues and profits has made the industry expand attracting other key drivers of the economy.
There are major requirements within the industry for you to work as an insurance underwriter. You must be competent to handle all the tasks required of you. In the code of conduct and code of ethics, you must be professional enough and have the best qualities required by the industry. As an underwriter, you are first required to register with the insurance body the insurance association then practice as an insurance underwriter. For the profession, there are minimum entry level requirement. The first is that you must be qualified academically and must hold at least a first degree in finance, business or insurance.
You must also have registered with the insurance association board and have taken their professional courses up to a certain level. This are the general requirements (Johnson and Golombek, 2016). As you progress in your career, you are required to boost your education like acquire a masters or a second degree in the same plus some years of experience in the industry. For one to be successful within the industry, one must be a people’s person a team player and dynamic in business approach due to the increasingly dynamic insurance change. The skills and qualification are as mentioned before; a degree and a professional qualification with some years of experience working in the industry (Kennedy, 2016).
These are the personality types and the strengths that I have to actively participate in the industry.
Communicate constructively
The team needs people who are able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly, clearly, openly, with respect to the collective as a whole and to each of its members in particular.
Actively listens
Good listeners are vital to teams for effective functioning. An effective member of the team should be able to perceive, understand and consider the ideas and points of view of other employees, without criticizing and challenging every argument given (Megginson and Whitaker, 2017)
Acts as an active participant
A good team member is an active participant. He is ready for team meetings, actively listens and participates in discussions.
Openly and willingly share
A good member of the team knows how to share. He is happy to share information, knowledge and experience, trying to keep other team members in the course of events. The lion’s share of communication between team members is in an informal tone.
Ready to help
Cooperation is an act of interaction with colleagues in order to fulfill the tasks set. An effective team member should become second nature
Demonstrates flexibility
Teams often deal with changing conditions, and sometimes provoke changes themselves. A good member of the team can quickly adapt to changing situations. He does not complain and does not fall into a stressful state due to innovations (Stewart, 2014).
Shows commitment to the team
A strong team player cares about his work, teamwork and teamwork. He every day demonstrates this concern, and expects from other participants the same.
Solves the problems
Of course, every team faces problems and difficulties. Sometimes it happens that the purpose of creating a team is to solve a certain problem
