Question:

UPS
The industry I have chosen for this recommendation project is logistics. Logistics involves the timely delivery of freight and goods from one place to another as well as the loading and unloading of the cargo. The United Parcel Service will be the organization I will research, with a focus on potential improvements to management techniques and recommendations for changes and improvements. The company was founded in 1907 by James E. Casey. The United Parcel Service is known as the world’s largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. The United Parcel Service reportedly delivers more than 15 million packages to over 220 countries and territories worldwide (Pierce, 2011).
I have worked for the United Parcel Service for the past several years. I have worked both as an employee and have been part of management during my current time here. This is the reason I’ve chosen this company for my assignment. I have been able to see both sides of the argument, when it comes to work related decisions management make with employees. The United Parcel Service has a union for its employees in which the current contract is set to end at the end of July. It is very intriguing for those reasons to research and learn more in depth about the company and to share the current issues and possible potential improvements to my class.

Answer:

United Parcel Services Workers’ Training
The United Parcel Company is a global package deliveries company with a huge investment in human and other forms of resources in the transport and communication industry. The size of the company and the huge volume of goods and information involved has led to the issuance of a lot of franchises and this makes it harder to manage. The human resource department is confronted with the challenge of retaining a high standard of the services offered by the company through its employees. The nature of the jobs in the companies are seasonal and permanent and the company conducts interviews from time to time in the hiring the new employees. The company also has a training program for workers such as truck drivers who undergo comprehensive training sessions and are only given the jobs they applied for upon successful completion of the training.
Ross, J. W. (2002). United Parcel Services: Delivering Packages and E-Commerce Solutions. SSRN Electronic Journal. doi:10.2139/ssrn.305714. This journal explores the process that one goes through before securing a job in the United Parcel Services Company. The article emphasizes that the company is concerned with the level of skills that the employees are equipped with. The truck drivers undergo a six-week training for instance in which they are subjected to all possible scenarios in course of deliveries and they are taught how to maneuver all of them. The training processes are well defined one has to proceed in a particular level in order to succeed to another until the company is convinced that the employee in question is fit to work in the field.
Nkomo, S. and Hoobler, J. (2014). A historical perspective on diversity ideologies in the United States: Reflections on human resource management research and practice. Human Resource Management Review, 24(3), pp.245-257. The journal reviews the process through which the United Parcel Services Company trains already hired workers. The company has a lot of programs aimed at making its employees better in terms of being fit for their jobs. The Learn as you Earn is one of the initiatives that the company has adopted as a strategy to uphold the quality of the services offered. The changes in the work environment are the causes of the regular training sessions and this helps the company to exploit new opportunities and to overcome the factors that affect its performance.
Levitz, J. (2010, April 5). UPS Thinks Out of the Box on Driver Training. Retrieved from https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303912104575164573823418844. The article explores the training of the United Parcel Services Company. It reports that the workers are trained using video games, simulations and later real-life experimental setups. The training aims at ensuring maximum safety of the package to be delivered and the employees as well as completing the required assignments in the required time. The management is quoted in the article explaining the importance of the training programs to the individuals and the company in general. The evolution of online shopping has also been reported as a necessity for training workers to manage online orders effectively.
In conclusion, training of workers in the United Parcel Company is a critical policy that enables the company to cope with changes in the business environment. The process of training workers is clearly spelled out and applicants for the seasonal or permanent positions have to complete the training courses successfully for them to get the jobs. The training includes simulations and the application of knowledge and skills in video games as well as real-life experiments. The training programs are comprehensive enough to enable the company to maintain its market position and competitive advantage.
