Question:

Does student well-being score (WEMWBS) predict self-reported average alcohol consumption (alc and/or logalc) after correcting for gender (sex) for University of Eastern Sydney students?
Further instructions:
-You should only use the variables ‘alc’ and/or ‘logalc’, ‘WEMWBS’ and ‘sex’.
-Correcting for ‘sex’ is just including ‘sex’ in the regression model.  When sex is in the model all other variables are corrected for it.
-Do report the results of your descriptive analyses
oWell labelled graphs can be copied from R Commander
oSummary statistics and tables should be manually typed
oSummarise the main findings of your descriptive analyses in words and describe how these findings inform your expectations and interpretation of the more complex models.
-Do report the results of your statistical inference and/or regression models
oAny fitted regression models should be manually typed and described in the text.
oAny hypothesis tests should contain all relevant information (use the 5 step method to be sure)
oAny other results such as confidence intervals should be manually typed and described in the text.
oSummarise the main findings of your regression model and statistical inference in one or two paragraphs.
oIf using ‘logalc’, results are expressed in units of log standard drinks (or use the exponential (exp or ex) function on your calculator if you wish to convert your results back into standard drinks).

Question 1:
Provide your appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of the presentation of the statistical material in Davoren et al (2015) against items 10, 12-17 of STROBE (about 400-500 words, 18 marks)
In this paper, the strengths and weaknesses for Statistics are explained in wide manner based on the data. The paper signifies the determination of the cultural changes in terms of the consumption and gender. The study includes the participants around 2275. The questionnaire consists of the scores which are collected and all other data for self reported alcohol consumptions are collected. The analysis for the male and female is carried out who smoke and consume alcohol. The study shows the result of mean, p-values for each gender male and female. The data covered includes the age, courses, years, accommodation, BMI, mental well being, smoker, and illicit drug use.
The statistical analysis gives the results for analysis of students who drink more hazardous alcohol.
The analysis gives the results of risk factors for both gender differences. Among the college university, the statistical results identified the significant results at 95% confidence interval with the p-values significantly less than 0.05. Multi-variate analysis is carried out to provide the outputs.
The analysis gives the results of risk factors for both gender differences in alcohol use and drinking progression. Among the European universities, the statistical results identified the significant results at 95% confidence interval with the p-values significantly less than 0.05 for the drinking progression among the adults.
The analysis gives the results of risk factors for both gender differences in risk factors and consequences for the alcohol use and related problems. Among the gender differences, the statistical results identified the significant results at 95% confidence interval with the p-values significantly less than 0.05 for the consequences for alcohol usage.  The statistical inferences clearly specify about the prevalence of the hazardous alcohol consumption that varies by gender, age, and all other factors.
Statistical inferences are adopted by the use of the multivariate analysis and the data clearly insists the significance for both male and female individually. Gender specific analysis had driven the results with the inferences. The statistical inferences can provide more identification of the significant results. The other variables are considered such as the course of study, year in college, accommodation, BMI, physical activity, mental well being, smoker, and illicit drug usage. The statistical results states that the overall response at 51%. The rate overall response is low which identified the achievement at national and international research students. No reason present for the non-respondents in the survey. It is clear that the data are over-representation in first years and less in last years.  The imbalance in the data leads to underestimate the data.
Question 2: Note: Students will get different answers as the data sets differ.
Present the findings of your descriptive analyses (graphs, tables and about 100-150 words, 8 marks)

Male

Female

Age

19.69780

19.56044

Alcohol

8.612637

6.269231

WEMWBS

44.48846

43.86374

As per the given data, the descriptive analyses show the graphs and tables, which are significant for the study about the alcohol consumption.
From the analysis of self-reported average alcohol consumption per week, among male and female it is clear that most of the people are consuming less number of drinks with high frequency. When compared to female, the male consumes alcohol much.
From the analysis of Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-being scale (WEMWBS), it is clear that the male rate themselves with scores around more than 40 to 50 maintaining the scores less than 72. In the case of female, the count is much lesser than the male.
Present the findings of relevant regression models and inferential analyses (about 150-200 words, 10 marks)
Relevant regression models are adopted by considering the age and alcohol, alcohol and WEMWBS
Regression between age and alcohol
The regression for the age and alcohol gives the residuals as the significance values. This indicates that when age is differed it causes changes to the alcohol consumptions too. The R-squared value indicates significant values
Alc = -0.0473 Age + 20.02
Regression between Alc and WEMWBS
The regression for the WEMWBS and alcohol gives the residuals as the significance values. This indicates that, when alcohol consumption is differed it causes changes to the WEMWBS too. The R-squared value indicates significant values.
Alc = -0.878 WEMWBS + 46.71
The value shows the significance for the determination of the alcohol consumption.
Provide your answer to the research question (40-80 words, 4 marks)
The answers to the research question regarding the consumption of alcohol among the male and female, it is clear that male drinks more than female. The regression model shows the fact that the variable WEMWBS can be used as suitable indicator for the alcohol consumptions.
