Summary and personal reflection on the article “Open innovation and within-industry diversification in small and medium enterprises: The case of open source software firms”
Answer:
The aim of the article is to examine the within –industry diversification in softer enterprises both medium and small which associate with the OSS SMEs i.e. the open source software community. The article provides new insight into the relation between open innovation and diversification within a community. The discussion and the conclusion of the article is based on the data collected by interacting with and interviewing with top executives of the OSS SMEs. The interviews have revealed new factors that waver the diversification within industry. In order to achieve the objectives that is to disclose how the two variables diversification and open innovation the article first of all concentrates upon the role of the size of the enterprise (Colombo, Piva & Rossi-Lamastra, 2014). It has been found after going through the feedbacks of 100 European OSS SMEs, the size of the enterprise affects the smooth proceedings of industry –diversification. The more an enterprise involves in various projects, the more they experience a diversified portfolio or image of the software products (Colombo, Piva & Rossi-Lamastra, 2014). On the other hand, the article also provides evidences that the industry –diversification is positively related to the practice of giving the right the enterprise programmers to add value to the OSS projects autonomously. However, there is a condition that the OSS SME has to possess enough resources in their internal technological department (Colombo, Piva & Rossi-Lamastra, 2014).
The authors at first have provided a suitable introduction to highlight and describe the topic properly. In order to present the topic from different aspects the article provides sufficient literature reviews of a variety of scholars. The literature reviews on the open innovation literature say that open innovation is of greater importance for the small and medium enterprises. The authors support that the small software enterprises utilize the diverse market opportunity by incorporating new product line diversification which is essential to succeed. It is true that the market is dominated by the giant software firms. The small software forms can give tough competition to the incumbents by enlarging the product portfolio (Colombo, Piva & Rossi-Lamastra, 2014). In this respect the reusability and modularity are the two hallmarks of software production, focusing on which the SMEs can easily beat the market (Colombo, Piva & Rossi-Lamastra, 2014). The previous literatures that the authors have consulted to construct the framework of the preset article show various mechanisms through which the SMEs can rise fast and diversify their products. The article further documents the circumstances under which the resource –constrained SME s encourage their open innovation associates to move strategically. It has been found from the examination that the resources of an SME s open innovation partners are important while implementing their strategies.
The article is extremely useful in demonstrating how open innovation and diversification is necessary for the small software companies, how they get benefitted and attain the competitive advantage over the market goliaths. I have learnt that open innovation is all about combining the internal resources with the external resources to facilitate innovative culture within the workforce. It is a type of business model that helps to link with outside opportunities to gain profit (Apel et al., 2016). On the other hand, I have also learnt that the process of widening the business opportunities by the help of additional potential of an existing product. In this particular article diversification by making some modification in the existing product has been broadly discussed. It has enabled ne to learn that SMEs can easily grab the market by increasing the reusability and modularity of the products.
However, I have also noticed by going through the research that there are as many disadvantages as there are advantages of promoting open innovation and diversification in the SMEs. Diversification helps to create a balance between in the firms in the moments of ups and downs. It also helps to expand the usability of the underutilized resources which have potential. On the other hand, diversification demands superior quality skills and lack of expertise can prove a failure for the company. Moreover, over diversified companies can reduce the possibility of innovation and limit themselves (Munir, Wnuk & Runeson, 2016). I have also gained insight that open innovation can be promoted by the big size of the SME and the number of projects they are involving with. Open innovation improves the potential of the existing products (Malmmose et al., 2015). Product costs can be reduced by this process and the company experiences new revenue streams. The employees are kept engaged and win the competition with the existing market giants LaToza & van der Hoek,2016).
