Question:
Write a report on the importance of change management over project management.
Answer:
Introduction
Change management can be referred to the process in which the management of an organization sets up the necessary prerequisites and readies the individuals and teams working within the organizational framework for adopting change in its everyday practices (Hayes, 2018). In the modern world with rapidly changing market conditions and emergence of new products by the day, it becomes important for every organization to be increase its adaptability and improve its tolerance towards change.
Importance of Change Management over Project Management
Globalization has brought in various new dimensions in the running of a business organization. With rapid improvement of science and technology and a continuously shifting paradigm companies are hard pressed to update their current technological factors in order to attain the maximum productivity (Jayatilleke & Lai, 2018). Globalization also makes business an uncertain affair. Organizations can no longer rely upon their age old techniques of a homogenous business strategy for a single unified market for earning profits (Carnall, 2018). The market has become more uncertain and the shackles of the past would only contribute to the organization’s losses. Efforts should be applied by the management to reconfigure the current business framework and the strategy in order to make the business sustainable and profitable in the long run.
Project Management is the practice of conducting the work of a team of individuals in a strategic manner in order to attain certain goals or objectives (Turner, 2014). Project management is very crucial for organizational success. Project management helps the organization accomplish specific tasks in a predetermined time frame and an inexpensive budget. Therefore, project management is an essential part of product development. It can allow organizations to create plants for new products without much expenditure. Secondly, it can also devise methods of cheaply manufacturing the products. The efficiency of production would surely reflect upon the prices and therefore, consumers can be offered the maximum value in the cheapest possible price. The process of project management can be subdivided into the following categories namely: initiation, planning, execution, controlling and closing.
When analyzing the concepts of project management and change management together, it can be observed that there are various levels on which these two processes are interlinked and effects each other in diverse ways. The completion of a project within the stipulated time frame depends upon various factors. Firstly, the technology that the organization is endowed with will determine to a large extent the time as well as the efficiency with which the project will be completed. Associated factors would include, the prevailing work culture, the education and training of the employees et cetera. Therefore, it can be inferred that if one or more of the factors intrinsic to the organization is not conducive to the project that is sought to be carried out then the entire project might fail. Therefore, it is always advisable for the management of the organization to adopt change management before they can embark upon a new project. Change management shall help both the employees and the executives of the organization to address the present shortcomings of the organization in terms of technology, manpower or other varied factors that can be important for the completion of the project (Kerzner, & Kerzner, 2017).
Change management is specifically directed towards the improvement of performance and productivity. However, employees might be resistant towards the adoption of newer methods of approaching their day to day activities. It shall require a lot of effort on the part of the management of the organization to impart the new ideas regarding production and work or to acquaint the employees with a new kind of technology and then eventually adopt it as the normative practice (Cameron & Green, 2015). It is needless to mention that once change is successfully implemented within the organizational framework, the conditions shall be favorable to successfully carry out and complete a project.
Conclusion
The above section illustrates why change management precedes project management. While project management is directed to address a specific organizational issue which the project is expected to resolve, change management on the other hand aims at the overall improvement of certain aspects of the organization which shall necessarily result in increased performance or productivity. Therefore, change management can lead to the creation of factors that can make the execution of a project more effective. Therefore, it can be seen that in the age of globalization where change is the only constant, it shall always be advisable for the organization to implement change before embarking upon the execution of a new project.
