Answer
According to Mr. Lim, the situation that is being faced by the company can be solved if the worker that are assigned in the packaging team are young in age as they will show more vigour and enthusiasm in their work and will possess more energy and hence work faster. He also thinks that if people with high abilities are assigned to one team then there will be better performances and therefore the productivity if the packaging team will increase (Rahim, 2017). Even though both of these ideas are good for increasing the productivity of the team, this solution will not work for a long time as there might be a chance that the new team would again start doing the same things that the old team does. There are various factors in both these decision which does not make it completely agreeable.
If young workers are hired for the packaging team, they will surely possess more energy to work faster, however, it happens a lot of times that young workers tend to have a shorter time span for concentration. They might work hard in the beginning but continue to lag behind as the time passes on. To manage this situation it is necessary that there is an elder or more experienced person who will be present in the team so that he is able to manage the team and motivate the young members to work faster and better. The experienced employee will also be able to solve any small issues that might be faced by the young employees and also if any sudden conflict arises (Chisholm & Smith, 2016). There may be many instances where there might be fights between the young employees. The experienced employee can always intervene and make the issue go away before it becomes big and goes to the management. Hence, instead of forming a team which consists of only young employees, Mr. Lim could put some experienced workers in the team too. Thus would enable a smooth running of the packaging team and could ensure more productivity if the experienced member is entrusted with the responsibility and management of the rest of the team. The member would also feel the drive to work better and set himself up as an example for the other new and young members of the packaging team (Huczynski, Buchanan & Huczynski, 2013).
Another suggestion that have been given by Mr. Lim is to place workers in the packaging team who possesses only high ability. Even though this is a very good decision which might ensure good productivity in the team as the high ability workers will work hard and to the best of their potential to get the task done in time. However, with the change in time there might be various changes that would occur within the team. This would be due to the competition among the employees. This competition will arrive as all of the members would be possessing the same level of skills, potential and abilities to work (Folger, Poole & Stutm,an, 2017). They would always try to compete with each other and try to prove themselves better than the others. Thus might be beneficial for the company if this competition remains a healthy one. However, if the competition reaches a high level it might soon turn into various reasons for conflicts among the members and this will also hamper the work and the workplace environment. Thus would become a disadvantage for the company and reduce the performance quality and quantity of the packaging team. Therefore, this solution that is provided by Mr. Lim might not be the best solution and therefore there should be team members in the team who are of mixed abilities but very hard working (Spaho, 2013). This would ensure a smooth and peaceful environment in the workplace as the members who are good will be able to guide their peers and motivate them to work harder.
Along with the above solutions, Mr. Lim should also conduct certain sessions with the employees where they will be able to share their grievances and issues that they are facing in the workplace. If the issues are solved on time and in the right manner then the work would also occur in the right way (Robbins & Judge, 2017). The team members would feel free to communicate with the management and hence will also work hard in return for the concern that the management is showing towards their problems. Mr. Lim should also talk to the management and arrange for motivational rewards and sessions for the employees is that they feel like their hard work is being appreciated by the company (Ganta, 2014). The workers should be rewarded for their good work and this would create a sense of goodwill among them towards the company and would push them to perform better so that they keep getting the rewards. The above mentioned arrangement would help Mr. Lim to solve the issues and increase the productivity of the packaging team.
