Question:
Part 1
Reflect: Find specific examples in the media or in life in which someone misunderstands someone else. This happens a lot with political and religious arguments, but it also happens in daily life, especially when we find ourselves in conflict with others. Have you interpreted others uncharitably?
Write: Present a case, either in the media or in your own life, in which someone interpreted another uncharitably. What specifically did the first person say? In what way did the other person understand it? What did the person really mean? Do you think that the misunderstanding was intentional? What were the consequences of the misunderstanding? How might the situation have been better if the person had practiced the principle of charity? Finally, are there areas in which you could do more to understand others favorably? How might you be a wiser person if you did so?
Part 2
Inferences to the Best Explanation.
Prepare: Choose a topic that is difficult or controversial to explain. Some good topics include hoaxes, unusual sightings (e.g. UFOs, bigfoot, etc.), the supernatural or paranormal (ghosts, levitation, etc.), conspiracy theories, unsolved crimes, court cases, etc.
Reflect: Do a little research to find a specific topic and learn about explanations on both sides. Consider what you think might best explain the observed facts of the case.
Write: Explain the topic you chose and why it is interesting or controversial. Present good arguments on more than one side of the issue (e.g. competing explanations of the facts). Analyze both arguments that you have presented. Then present your own argument for your theory that you feel will best explain this phenomenon. Are there any holes in your theory? Is there any information that would be likely to strengthen or weaken your case?
Answer:
Part 1: is true that social media is a powerful tool to communicate. Therefore, it is likely to encounter communication problems because a written expression can never wholly communicate what is actually meant or exclaimed. Misunderstandings are inevitable while chatting online. For example, on social media conversation, a person texted excitedly to his friend about their victory in some case. That friend replied “Really?” joyously in hope that the person was not joking but the person mistook it and thought that his friend is being sarcastic about his victory which was unexpected from him. I personally do not interpret the opposite person uncharitably because I understand that the situation is likely to happen and try my best to do face to face interaction and make him understand verbally.
On Twitter, in the year 2014, Richard Dawkins had been smeared with the accusation of going beyond the usual way. He had twitted something against child sexual abuse that generated from his own experience. Some people uncharitable misinterpret him and took his comments as completely opposite of what he actually meant. Richard had actually twitted “Mild pedophilia is bad . Violent pedophilia is worse”. However, his accusers mistook the statement as an endorsement of ‘mild pedophilia’. Richard actually had meant to highlight the horrific experience of violent pedophilia but he did not intend to make light the other kinds of pedophilia. Later Richard had clarified himself and cleared all the doubts of people by a post on his website. According to the principle of charity Richard’s statement should have been better if they had rationally judged it. I would be a wiser person if I try to understand rationally and logically examining the truth behind the statement.
Part 2: The existence of paranormal entities has been remaining a significant topic of controversy. It has been found that most of the human race tend to believe in the paranormal elements or the ‘invisible agents’ which are not apparent to the naked eyes. It is known that the aspect we do not see or cannot see catch our interest and curiosity more than the aspects we can see. There are some evidences in the paranormal science that they do exist and stay among us bit we cannot see them. However, another group of people just discard the belief and rationally establish their argument saying science dies not give space to such interpretations. According to ‘The Evolutionary Psychology (2015), such beliefs arise from the calamity and illness caused certain invisible bodies such as devils, ghosts, spirits and even gods. Although people do believe in spirits, the belief in the spirituality of God is more by rates (Buss 2015). I believe that the argument on this topic cannot be mitigated, conclusion can ever be reached and there will always remain a contradiction. It is because on both the parts of the argument, “it exists” and ” it does not exist” proofs are there to support.
