Question:
Online-only students are required to participate in Assessment Forum discussions with fellow online-only studentsPart 1 : Students must contribute an initial statement in response to each of the following two questions in this Forum. This should be much more than just a vague opinion – it should be a well supported argument/position, based on sound research and evidence:Question 1: Does the Australian media (news and entertainment) give the general public an accurate portrayal of the criminal justice system? Why/Why not?Question 2: What element of the Victorian criminal justice system is most in need of reform and why?Part 2: Once they have made their initial statements students are expected to contribute at least 6 informed supportive replies/counter-positions to other student’s initial statements (and/or to an ongoing discussion of their own or others statements) across the two question threads.
Answer:
Responses to Question 1
I completely disagree with the view put forward by my friend in the first statement as i believe there is still a significant authenticity in news reporting and information dissemination by media. There are number of different information that would have remained unknown to people if the media did not intervene. for instance, the information of the elaborate sting operation on Morocombe’s murder case was first was first shown by the media which attracted Government’s attention and also engaged common citizens. it can be stated that due to the change in media strategy some of the news reporting systems have taken the easy way around to popularise their channels but questioning the potential of Australian media system (Surette, 2014).
I partially agree to the statement made by the statement holder in the first question about the credibility of the Australian media industry. It is clear that the media industry has gone from original to synthetic adding spices to news that reaches the audience nowdayas apart from that they also play an important role in keeping a particualr turmoil intact be it political or criminal. What really irks me is sometime is the modern day approach of the Australian Media to patronise political bodies to show synthetic news about criminals and which doesnt show the real picture of the criminal justice system in the country (Schmalleger et al., 2014).
Well, the role of media cannot be overlooked in the overall growth and development of a nation. However, media has to take a slightly different path to reach to audience in order to provide them the real news. i have certain points to put forward in this case. First of all it is the duty of the media to bring the latest news regarding criminal justice system and hence the media industry focuses on developing the news in such a way that it reaches the audience and they get to know it. It is also their attempt to reveal the truth which has been the only principle of many top news channels and organisations in Australia whcih has been their goodwill especially in terms of criminal cases hence my friend should understand the modern condition and then comment on the role of media (Bartels, 2015).
Responses to Question 2
first of all rate of crime in Victoria has reduced as compared to the other parts of Australia and youth crime rate had been pretty low in this part of the country whcih clearly shows that there was no reason to revamp the existing system of youth correction in Victoria. There are other key areas which needs to be worked upon for instance racism in the country and women correctional measures which are far more important segments. infrastructural change could be only be brought when the government feels there is a significant need of having that system in place which in this case is not felt important by the GOvernment (Farthing, Bessant and Watts, 2017).
I completely agree with the statemement put forward by my fellow classmate. even though the rate of crime is not that high in victoria especially commited by the youths, it is important that the government focuses on taking strict actions on the overall revamp of the society. It is like eliminating danger before it manifest. if we analyse the possibiity of youth crimes in Australia it is in a precarious situation and hence it is extremely important that Victorian Government emphasise on changing an old existing infrastructure to improve the justice and correctional measures for them (O’CONNELL & O’CONNELL, 2014).
The Youth crime management is a sensitive issue for the Victorian Government i feel. It cannot be denied that youths have to be handled extremely assiduosly because of their age and hence for that there is a significant amount of time needed to plan that strategy. On the other hand the present correctional strategy that the Government takes does the job more or less effectively. I wouldn’t say that it is not important to bring in change in the system but i feel it is important to give it more time to the Victorian Government in order to develop a stronger plan for youth correctional measures (Taylor, Earle & Hester, 2014). Hence i prefer to be neutral on this point.
