Answer:
Introduction
The journal article selected for this essay is “Returnee entrepreneurs and firm performance in Chinese high-technology industries.” It will describe the approach and the general rationale that is adopted in this journal. It will also discuss about the reason of taking these approaches. It will explain about the background along with the context of the article. The returnee businessmen had come back to their nations. So it will evaluate about the returnee businessmen and their impact on the performance of the companies. It will also assess the methodology of data collections utilized by the authors. It will also provide the justification of the findings.
Approach and Rationale
The article had used the combined structure of the survey, which was a knowledge-based view (KBV) and the theory of social capital. These two approaches balance one another. The KBV concentrates on the formation of knowledge and internal acquisitions, whereas the method of social capital reflects the significance of money while gaining experience from the external networks of the companies (Dai and Liu, 2009). Therefore, it balances the KBV by highlighting the fact that critical assets might be out of the limits of the companies and thus the companies could share their knowledge and data in their range.
The KBV suggests that knowledge is the most important calculated asset of the companies and the principal source for forming competitive benefits. The individuals create and stores the knowledge. The main function of the companies is to implement the knowledge for the production of their products and facilities. The basis of unique benefit stays within its capability to incorporate the knowledge of various peoples. KBV states that the knowledge is inserted and carried over by many entities comprising of the culture, personality, strategies, procedures, documents, structures, and staffs of the companies. Knowledge are of two kinds, explicit knowledge, and tacit knowledge. The explicit knowledge could be stated and easily connected between the individuals and the companies. The tacit knowledge is visible in its implementation, and it is challenging and expensive to handover the tacit knowledge from one person or company to other person or company. It is expected that the performance of companies owned by returnees would be influenced and differentiated through the capability of the founder to build internal knowledge and gain external knowledge.
The theory of social capital provides higher importance on social relationships and the utilization of tacit knowledge in the perspective of the international nations. The social relationships highlight the relations between the social capital and access to assets consisting of both personal ties and the assets included in the connections (Grosu and Nicolae, 2015). The returnee businessmen those who had enhanced their social capital in the method of global systems could behave as a link among the markets of China and global markets. The social capital might help the returnee businessmen to access essential assets, and increase the performance of their companies.
Background and Context
Almost 275,000 foreign scientists and students of China had come back to China in the year 2006. Among them, nearly 5000 returnees had established 2000 new high-technology companies in Zhongguancun Science Park (ZSP) of Silicon Valley of China (Qin et al., 2017). The scientists, engineers, or students who were educated, studied or done a job in OECD nations are referred to as returnees and came back to their native nations to become returnee businessmen by establishing the fresh projects. Immigrants who had come back from foreign nations have played a vital role in the economic growth of emerging countries, like China, Taiwan, South Korea, and India. The background and the personality of returnee businesspersons are, and their impact on the performance of their projects is known very little. There is a lack of proofs that could explain the methods adopted by the companies owned by the returnee businessmen to achieve the competitive benefits in comparisons to the companies owned by the local businessmen. The authors had aimed to clear these loopholes by analyzing the performance of the companies owned by the returnee businessmen in comparison to the companies owned by the local businessmen in ZSP (Zhou et al., 2016). They had also evaluated the aspects of knowledge and social capital of returnee businesspersons and their impact on the performance of the companies.
Data Collection Methods
The authors had done a survey on the basis of a questionnaire and the companies chosen for sample were inside the biggest science park in China, ZSP of Beijing. The park attracts a huge number of returnee foreign businesspersons of China. All the companies of the survey are from high-technology sectors. As the companies owned by the returnee are the current sensation of China, the writers had limited their sample to SMEs which has less than 300 staffs, and net sales value was under 5 million (Mayer et al., 2015). By implementing the conditions of high-technology SMEs established in 3–5 years, they had recognized 1003 companies owned by the returnees and local companies of about 1138 from the list received from the administration of ZSP. 857 companies owned by the returnees and 976 local companies, which makes about 85.4% and 85.6% of the total population of China, had agreed to take part in the survey (Liu et al., 2015). They had changed the questionnaire as per the response expected from the firms. The response had revealed that the participants are sensitive with the questions based on their performance like the sales and revenues. The changed feedback form were mailed to 857 companies owned by the returnees and 976 local companies (Pruthi, 2014). Total 353 used questionnaires from the returnee businessmen and 358 questionnaires from the local companies came back.
Findings
The findings had shown that the alignment of the international entrepreneurship is significant. The alignment of the international entrepreneurship of the returnee businessmen is positively connected with the performance of the companies on the basis of education and job experience in foreign countries (Bai et al., 2017). The global vision of the returnee businessmen highlights a mindset of innovative management which enhances the competitive benefits of their companies and increases the performance of their business.
Conclusion
The paper had discussed about the approach and rationale studied in the journal. There are two approaches adopted in the journal, the first one is KBV, and another one is a theory of social capital. It had also explained the reasons for choosing these approaches. Then the background and the context of the study had been evaluated. It was about the returnees those who had come back from OECD nations to their nations that is China and started some businesses, which later became very successful. The data collection methodology had been described where the authors had carried on a survey on the basis of a questionnaire and the companies chosen for the sample were inside the biggest science park in China, ZSP of Beijing. Moreover, the findings of the study were also analyzed.
