Question:
1. How do attitudes and culture impact on discrimination?
2. In relation to innovation which of the types (rate of adoption and style) most reflects the way you are? Explain why you think so. What does a person’s style of innovation mean in terms of how they respond to innovation in a workplace?
3. What can new media mean in relation to the way you will conduct your professional practice?
Answer:
1. In my point of view, culture and attitudes have significant impact on discrimination. While working on the week 7 assignment I obtained an extensive knowledge regarding the Code of Ethics for Community Development. While working as a social worker with National Association of Social Workers, I had the practical opportunity to learn misconception and cultural context can lead one to practice discrimination. Even in my personal encounter, I experienced dilemma in regards with confidentiality and discrimination in one case where the needy person who was seeking help was from poor financial background. Hence, in order to eliminate the ethical dilemma I think it is required to relay upon the Codes of Ethics in relation with self determination and confidentiality. Hence conclusion can be drawn that as per my observation and experience myths and misconception regarding culture adversely impact on the discrimination. On the other hand, self-overestimation and underestimated outlook towards other fuel discrimination significantly.
2. I believe among the two types of innovation, that are rate of adoption and style, the rate of adoption reflects more the way I am since rate of adoption refers to the relative speed at which members of an organization with social purpose adopt a new innovation. The rate of adoption is generally measured by the time duration which a member of a social organization takes in order to adopt the innovation. Most importantly, it is determined by the adopter category which varies from one individual to other. As per my knowledge, the individuals can be categorized into five different types, which are innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and laggards. In my view fall in the category of ‘Early Adopters’ since early adopters are tend to be younger by age and possess the highest degree of opinion leadership as compared with other categories of adopters which is quiet similar to the attributes I possess.
3. As per my obtained knowledge regarding new media, it alludes to the digital media which has the special feature of interaction unlike other types of media. The major advantage that new media generates is the opportunity of two way communication involving the practices of computing. The major characteristics of new media include briefer, a sense of immediacy that is speedy communication, connection between the world inside and the world outside us and son. On the other hand, the major benefit generated by new media is the advancement of social movement.
In respect to that, I obtained knowledge from “Closing the Gap between Knowledge and Practice with New Media and Marketing” new media plays a major role in filling the gap between knowledge and practices. As a social worker the reading has been beneficial for me since it gave me deeper insights as to how new media or digital media can help in me reaching out to the help seekers easily within a minimum time. As a social worker it is important for me to assure that the needy people who suffer from mental disturbance do not feel left alone which I believe new media made an ease to that.
While conducting study, the reading named “The impact of media – good, bad or somewhere in between” helped me to understand both the positive as well as negative impact of new. I have learned that like any other technological advancement, new media generates both the advantages and disadvantages. While it gives the opportunity of being connected easily, if mishandled improperly, users’ life can also be ruined. Hence, I believe it is solely depended on the use in order to determine its advantages or disadvantages.
Meanwhile, the reading namely “Finding technology’s role in the counseling relationship” gave me deeper insights in order to figuring out the significance of technology in counseling relationship. The reading especially referred to the text therapy with the help of technology. Hence, it gave me a quite an extensive knowledge of how technology can be used in a judicial manner in order to assist the help seekers.
