Questions:
1. Design a multimodal resource using ICT that includes persuasive and expository elements for use with a literary text in the classroom. There needs to be a specific focus on planning for effective learning for students from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
2. Develop a written rationale that makes explicit links between relevant research literature, in particular the use of Multiliteracies Pedagogy and the Four Resources Model to cater for diverse learners in the upper primary English classroom. Justify the design process by making overt reference to the text design elements used in the multimodal resource – linguistic, visual, spatial, auditory, and gestural.
Answer:
The mission of education is defined as a way of ensuring that all scholars profit from education and thus ensuring that they contribute in communal, public and commercial life. Literacy pedagogy together with the multiliteracies as the one that is expressed by the poem Instruction for Growing Poetry by Tony Mitton has a role to play in the fulfilling of this mission. Pedagogy can be defined as a teaching and learning relationship that is used to create a potential for building learning conditions which in turns leads to equitable social participation.
Multiliteracies are a supplement of the old-fashioned literacy pedagogy by looking into the concept of documented multiplicity. The poem used focuses on the modes of presentation that are much wider than the dialectal alone. The presentation used to present the poem is an example. The presentation may fluctuate as according to some cultural contexts. It also generates an altered type of pedagogy, the one in which the linguistic and additional modes constantly being re-engineered by it operators as they try to achieve the various cultural purposes. In doing so the poem and multiliteracies supports the pedagogical approaches that cater for student diverse culture and learning needs.
The poem presentation is very important for the literacy development of the diverse students in a class due to the motivation and engagement that it provides them. The students are provided with opportunities to communicate, build relationships and talk out their views through the use of media like blogs, wiki or social networks. The student is also able to make higher order thinking skills by using the concepts maps. They are also able to develop the multimodal texts, and by doing so, they can build their conference.
The poem works in a perspective that there is increased multiplicity and incorporation of meaning-making. The new communication media are reshaping the use of language worldwide. The rapid change in the technologies of meaning has meant that there is also a rapid change in standards that are found in the ends of literacy learning as it is taught including those of poems.
Cope, &Kalantzis. (2000) says that, there is a need for a much wider view of literary than the way the traditional linguistic approach portrays it due to the improved cultural and linguistic diversity combined with the communication multiplicity in the current world. The poet Tony Mitton can be seen to put this fact into consideration in his poem. The Multiliteracies approach is a way of overcoming the limitation of the conventional methods. By using the poem it emphasizes on the importance of discussing the cultural and linguistic differences in our community and thus becoming important to the “working, civic and private lives of the student.” Cope, & Kalantzis, (2000). The multiliteracies approach to pedagogy as also portrayed by the poem allows students to attain literacy knowledge, fostering critical engagement necessary for them, creating access to the evolving language of work, power, and community. It allows a student to scheme their communal prospects and also to achieve triumph through the achieving employment.
Multiliteracies are most effective when used to support the curriculum and also supplement the skills and knowledge that are developed. The poem by Tony Mitton can be seen to be supported by the use of the multiliteracies in presentation. Use of the four resources model can thus achieve it. Effective reading of the poem is drawn on practices and resources that allow the learner gain skills as they engage in reading and writing activities. The reading activities will require them to break the code of texts, participate in the meaning of texts, use functionality, and critically analyses and transform texts. The four resources model are meant to achieve the stated concepts that the poem is trying to achieve.
In the changing world, teachers are seen as the designers of the learning environment and processes and not as superiors that are ordering what those beneath their powers should do and think. The preparation of the poem is an indication of the change in the design and the approach that is being used in the modern technologized world by the teacher. The transformation of the educational research into a design science, which allows for the study of how various curricular, pedagogical, and tutorial room plan are used to motivate and achieve different levels of learning. Multiliteracies pedagogy which is associated with the literary text together with the four resources model can be seen as a center of the new map.
With teachers being faced with a challenge of providing a curriculum that caters for the diverse learners. It is due to this reason that teachers need to use pedagogies that teach student skills that are important in the 21 century. With the use of four resources model questions can be used as a basis for structuring lessons. Also, small group discussion can be set in motion by the teachers as a way of analyzing any multimodal texts. The discussion of Found on the back of Packet poem is meant at achieving the needed change. It presentation and introduction to the student can be seen to achieve the stated need of developing the important skills.
The practical teaching of multiliteracies link will contain knowledge – what have been taught-, the pedagogical knowledge – of how it is taught-, and technology (ICT) as by Luke, &Freebody, (1999). The quotation provides an insight into the incorporation of technology to learning in classes rather than be handled as a different entity for example, through presentation as portrayed by the video of introduction to Tony Mitton poem Found on the back of the packet. It thus means the use of technology is most effective when it is planned and integrated into the lessons instead of being used as an add-on or at fill time once the work scheduled for had been completed. It is to be noted that most of the upper classes are multiliterate and are more motivated when they use the internet, play games and use multimodal texts than the use of books during their free time.
The poet –Tony Mitton- knew that the most effective way to engage students would be to emphasize the issues and matters that affect them. He thus created a poem that is relevant to them and that they can relate to. It can thus be obtained that the pedagogy should contain relevant text for the students to gain their attention. The case may include relevance to the world, relationship and any other trending topic that might be changing them.
In conclusion, the poem can be seen as a good literary text that is enabling the decrease in the diversity level among the student while also motivating them. The diverse learners are well catered for in this approaches.
