Questions:
1. State and justify the assumptions you make of the Quad bike expected use, payload details and variations (i.e. rider mass, payload mass, location, mass variations, and road variations). Use these variations in each of the following analysis where appropriate.2. State any analysis your report does not cover but could have been done if a larger analysis was required and more time and information was available. Draw diagrams to support your analysis if needed.
Answer:
Problem Scope
The all-terrain quad bike is analyzed to determine its dynamic behavior in different degrees of freedom. The quad bike is a four-wheeled vehicle used as a source of entertainment for riders and it requires expert riding skills especially in very rough terrain. This paper seeks to study the single and two-degree of freedom of the quad bike from the basis of the illustrated free body diagram. The quad bike may not be ridden on smooth ground always, rather, it may be involved in different road surfaces and at times it may be ridden on a ramp. The different scenarios are modelled and analyzed to determine the speed.
ASSUMPTIONS
It is assumed that the quad bike under study is an all-terrain vehicle which tends to be much lighter than the common bike and operates on four-wheel.
The vehicle travels on low pressure tires which makes it quite difficult to negotiate bends.
Designers have improved the chassis for the design and material equipment to improve the vehicle performance.
LIMITATIONS
The project is limited to analyzing the quad bike in the single and two-degrees of freedom.

SINGLE DEGREE OF FREEDOM
Aim: To determine the suitable suspension stiffness and damping.
simplify the system to a single degree of freedom systems
The front wheeled steered quad bike product from Yamaha is tested on a single-track model such that the information is given. The system is simplified to an SDOF system so as to allow it to only oscillate in a single direction, either up or down.
In a combined setup comprising of the mass, spring, and damper, the resulting equation is given as,
On the ground, there is an equal and opposite force acting upwards against the force acting on the quad bike.
The ramp simulation and testing can be done per wheel or for the entire quad bike. In the simulation above, the quad bike experiences lateral displacement. When the ramp is too high, the quad bike may roll over causing injury to the rider.
E.4 Draw conclusions if you were to increase the number of DOF’s how accuracy will be improved.
With every additional degree of freedom, more sections of the system are analyzed and the stiffness and damping coefficients tend to increase to ensure that they handle the irregularities of the road surface. The quad bikes are ridden on smooth to very rough terrain. The damping shock absorbers for the quad bikes need to have a very large coefficient such that it can absorb the irregularities and the stiffness ensures that the bike rider does not feel the road surface irregularities (Kerchmann & Hohman, 2009).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
The single degree of freedom and the two different 2DOF systems are analyzed in this project. The dynamic system behavior analysis of the quad bike when exposed to different non-linearities assists the designers to design suitable controllers to deal with the non-linearities. For instance, on rough terrain, the two degree of freedom analysis results in a given stiffness and damping coefficient suitable for the quad bike. The quad bike, relatively, behaves differently on the ramp as compared to a uniform straight terrain. The use of other degrees of freedom in the analysis results in better performance analysis and covers more attributes and aspects that could affect the operation of the quad bike (Seoung-On, et al., 2012).
This project successfully analyzed the single degree of freedom and two-degrees of freedom for the quad bike with the aim of determining the suitable suspension stiffness and damping in the design of the quad bike for an all-terrain vehicle. The bikes are considered a risky vehicle as they do not have a covering section of the chassis leaving the rider exposed to a myriad of environmental hazards. The kinematic models used are good for analysis and ensure that all the forces and particulars are well captured.
