Question:
You shall visit a site demonstrating sustainable urban design and built form. Prepare a field report based on the structure listed below.
Address the following points in your report:
Introduction and background: where is the site, why was it chosen, what is its relevance to this unit?
Discussion to cover the following (example for sustainable housing project):
Site assessment: What are some of the key factors of the site affecting the environmental performance of the building? Consider Local Government planning controls; size of the lot; orientation; overshadowing; landscape & soil; stormwater runoff and drainage.
Describe the solstice sun angles and dates that describe the apparent solar path at this latitude. Explain the ‘sector analysis’ as it affects the site.
Discuss key principles of climate sensible design demonstrated in the building.
How energy efficient are you? List the units per day (kWh/day) of electricity that you use in your home and what is the average in your city or region?
Mention some materials that should be avoided in building construction projects. Why? Suggest alternatives for each.
Explain how roof or wall insulation is used in the project. What type and rating is it?
Many people think that you need a large block to grow food. Discuss strategies that can be employed to grow food in a small urban area.
List characteristics of the local soil type. What organic measures could be taken here to improve the soil for growing food?
Explain water sensitive features that can be or are used in the landscaping.
How could the development could be improved to become a “low carbon” development?
Conclusions and key learnings.
Answer:
Introduction
The demand for energy in almost all the sectors of the industrialization has increased. This increase in energy demand has led to the depletion of the non-renewable sources of energy. The energy policies have been drafted to save the situation. Some of the policies have included the introduction of energy studies in the school curriculum(Delmas, Magali, Miriam and Omar 2012). It is in line with these policies that the topic of the Environmental Technology for Sustainable Development was adopted for the study. In order to have a proper insight into this topic, a production plant was chosen for a visit. The site selected for the study was Richgro Biogas in Jandakot”
Site assessment
Richgro is located around 20km south of Perth’s Central Business District (CBD). The $8 million plant was started as Richgro and it is governed by its guideline of policies and the activities. It is the first of plant of its kind in Australia. The plant can process in excess of 35,000 tons of business and mechanical natural waste a year, with the degree to deal with 50,000 tons. Utilizing this feedstock, it has the ability to deliver up to 2 megawatts of power and 2.2 megawatts in warmth.
The key process that is utilized by the plant is anaerobic respiration that leads to the production of the lactic acid. The characteristic smell within the company explains it all. The production of the lactic acid takes place through process of mesophilic and thermophilic(Lou, Xian, Jaya and Goen 2013).
Water efficiency
In this particular company, cooling towers regularly speak to the biggest level of water utilization in modern activities. Some approaches to enhance the effectiveness of cooling towers and lessen water utilize include:
Utilization of the underground water catchment.
Introduce sub-meters to screen make-up and seep on each cooling pinnacle.
Appropriately prepare and instruct cooling tower administrators
The storm water is tapped from the roofs and stored on the tanks for engine or plant cooling processes. The grey water is also recycled through treatment process and later reused in the cooling process (Panwar, Kaushik, and Surendra 2012).
Energy efficiency
The decomposition processes or the anaerobic respiration on the organic matter leads to the production of energy. The efficiency of the production depends on the conversion rate. The conversion rate was found to be affected by the quality of the organic matter used and also the design of the digester. The liquid fuel indicated consistency in the energy production and the life cycle analysis gave a varying energy efficiency of 83%.This particular percentage translated to production of 2 megawatts of energy.
Materials used in the plant
Bio filters
The air quality within the plant is being maintained by the use of the Bio filters. The bio filters consist of the scrubber, a hydroponic system of the plant and an aquatic system. The scrubber is made up of fiberglass modules that are parallel with their external faces being porous. The air is drawn through the scrubber and then to the adjacent hydroponic region into the air handling system. The thin water film called biofilms is created that makes the porous surface wet. This system describes the operations of the hail exchangers.
Woodchips
The wood chips are mixed with the substantial amount chicken wastes for the biogas production. The materials are first weighed upon delivery and then put for storage. They are basically sanitized before being fed into the fermenter. The entire logistics is supported by automation and drive technology. The wood chips help prevent the formation of the sludge.
Food Production
The plant utilizes the organic matter including the remains of the food. These organic matters are collected from the nearby restaurant by the relevant team. Richgro can give a support of neighborhood sustenance and beverages makers – redirecting outdated stock or flawed stock from landfill and utilizing it to create biogas utilized nearby to deliver warmth and power – a colossal on location putting something aside for Richgro with the special reward of being to offer some power over into the matrix. The waste fluid from the procedure is to supplement rich and is utilized in the creation of their manure. The collected poultry materials, organic food, livestock remains among other undergo sanitization and pre-treatment process before they are subjected to the fermenter (Dearman and Bentham 2017).
