Question:
1. Working title (or at least keywords that your title might include)2. Topic /Area chosen What area/issue have you decided to write about? What questions will you be asking about this area? Please make sure your project is suitably focused, has scope for analysis, sustained argument and discussion of the ideas of other authors!3. Visual Culture / Practice-led option?Which of these two options do you see your essay as fitting within?4. Relevance to Your Work / Other Relevance / Reason for Your Interest Why did you choose the topic? Why is the issue important for you? Where relevant, can you say how your interest in this topic emerges from your studio practice – how is it manifest in your current practice or what you are thinking of working on in the coming year?5. Case Studies / Cultural Artistic Contexts to Discuss (c. 150-200 words)What other artists, exhibitions, events, or other cultural examples are you going to write about? Note that even where taking the “practice-led” option, you will need to contextualise your work in relation to existing practices. With the “visual culture” essay, choosing appropriate examples will also be key in establishing your topic. In either case, a focused essay, which restricts itself to a limited and closely related number of examples is usually the most successful! Please explain why the selected examples have been chosen.6. Critical Contexts What concepts and approaches will you be using to understand your material? Who are the most important authors who have written about this topic already? Can you identify different positions, approaches or controversies in the field?7. Indicative Preliminary BibliographyAim for a list of at least 6 books, 4 journal articles and no more than 3 websites (NOTWikipedia!).The bibliography should include intellectually substantial material that offers a framework for critical analysis and relates to the theoretical frameworks noted in section E, above. Your bibliography will give your tutor an idea of the research you propose to do, and also provide you a focus for work over summer, preparing you for your first tutorial! Please use the conventions for bibliographies laid out in the Cite Them Right Harvard referencing style. Basic details are given on the Fine Art Library Subject Guide referencing pages, and full details of the style are available online, via Cite The Right’s Website.
