Question:
Maps

Agas Map of London (1561)
Braun and Hogenberg Map of London, from Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1572)
Map of London from John Norden Speculum Brittaniae (1593)
Hugh Alley, A Caveatt for the Citty of London (1598).

Do we need any additional information or other sources to understand these maps – if so, what would be most useful?
Answer:

Introduction
The maps in this unit are mostly early modern maps in London. During that time, maps were used as part of the informal and formal education[1]. The maps were used for illustration in the institutions, even though geography was being taught as a subject. During the early modern times, maps were seen as aesthetic and mercantile objects encouraging informal education. Research shows that as an education tool, the success of using the maps as patronage structures was influenced more by the mathematical practitioners than the formal education settings. While grammar schools had interest in the study of the cosmos and the earth, the formal institution stressed on geography[2]. This piece analyses the different early modern maps of London, while discussing the information such maps helped those who wanted to navigate the city.
The first map The Agas map of London has places, topics, people and terms. The online map also shows a range of locations while using the navigating bar, one can view the locations they want to see and then click the target symbol and the locations they want to see[3]. The Agas map has a layout of the street and shows different subways. From the birds-eye-view, one can be able to see standing objects like animals. The map has church, street, playhouse, taverns and award. The map typically shows the early London personalities, and perhaps most of their religious, cultural and leisure activities. There is a glossary, which is not written in English, but perhaps can be understood or relevant in the early modern London era. The map shows
The second map, Braun and Hogenberg Map of London, from Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1572) shows different locations while having the names of the different streets or subways. This map shows detailed information of different places and makes it easy for a person to navigate through the streets. It’s quite good afro an ancient map. It has the names of buildings; it has images of people perhaps depicting certain practices around the time. The image of the map comes from an angle directly above which makes it possible to see standing features such as people and trees. The map is like a history guide and shows the city developments from the vicinity. The map has a street layout and a plan showing ground features[4]. The map looks like a woodcut ancient map.
The other map, The Anno map of London of 1653, shows a topographical Record of a map which is supposed to help a person go around without any trouble. It is titled “a guide for a cuntrymen in the famous citey by the helpe of the plot they shall be able to know how far it is to any street”. This seems to have been the ancient English that was being used to communicate. The map has columns below which are marked with cyphers and are followed by numbers. The numbers show specific places according to the sheet to match the name with a given location. Other tables seem to be lacking as the guide to the countrymen because the corresponding numbers are missing in the table[5]. The map has a reference table with critical landmarks and churches at the bottom right. With the map, one can see the damage caused by the fire in 1666, from birds- eye-view. Just like the other two maps, the chart shows different streets and standing objects.
The maps above majorly try to act as a link between the user and the cartographer. The maps try to comprehend the cognitive and abilities of the map users. In the Anno map, we see an attempted simplification of the maps, where numbers are put against buildings so one would be able to locate the name and position from the numbers easily. The cartographers in the maps discussed were able to guide the users of the time. However, the maps can be improved by having a title, which can easily identify the image as a map. A good map should also have borderline, which show where the map begins and stops. In the maps above, additional information can be a scale indicator, which indicates a unit measure on the map against a unit measure in reality. Other information which can be added is a legend, which will show the colors and symbols distinguishing different things in the map. The maps should also have the name of the cartographer, title and the date of the creation of the map. Additionally, the orientation is important which shows the compass and the purpose. The purpose will keep the audience in mind. The 1653 map of Anno states the purpose as that of guiding country people, the rest of the maps should also state the purpose of creating the maps.
Conclusion
Our knowledge of maps from early education is still rudimentary, and maps were part of education during the renaissance times. To the dwellers of early modern London, it seems that the experience of an elevated observer was essential in using the maps[6]. With the transition from ancient cartography, interests should be renewed so as to establish common interests. With the improvement in technology, there is a need to emphasize on the dangers and opportunities of visualization as well as engaging in the implications of distributed mapping.
