Question:
Describe the electronic medical record system at your current or former organization, or one with which you are familiar. What limitations have you experienced, if any? Did this organization realize increased patient quality and decreased medical errors as a result of utilizing this system? Explain.
Answer:
Introduction
The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre also known as KFSHRC is one of the largest medical facilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In the recent times, they have realized the need of implementing high-end technological means into their working architecture. In this report, the adaptation of the KFSHRC into implementing an Electronic Medical Record System will be elaborated throwing light on the medical and financial advantages of this adaptation.
The EMR System of KFSHRC
The Sehaty Application has been launched by the KFSHRC to enable users to access their health records and other crucial information from one place. They are allowed perform several other tasks and make data pull requests using this application. The patients and staffs are also provided with wearable gadgets to make real time access to these data. Their EMR includes the following facilities:
Patient’s personal information and health records are stored in details once they check in to the hospital. These are further updated during the patient’s stay in the hospital.
It also keeps a track of the medical information collected by the personal health recorder gadgets like Glucometers, smart-bands and so on.
It also allows the user to store their medical documents, test results and other crucial health check-up reports (King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, 2018).
Several other such important functionalities are moulded into this electronic system of the KFSHRC.
The Benefits of adapting to EMR System
KFSHRC has witnessed tremendous positive feedbacks in terms of their EMR system integration. Not only have they uplifted the quality of health information storage system of their patients, but also have they enhanced their quality of service and hence this fostered the amount of business coming their way. The main advantages that they faced with this up-gradation are as follows:
Managing large data volumes: The EMR system helped them to cope up with their increasing data demands. Their data storage requirements was increasing by 20% every year which was tactfully handled by the big data analytics integrated within their EMR system.
Abolished loss of health records: The EMR also ensured that no patient record was lost and there is no need to search through the heaps of hundreds of files physically to find a particular record. This time, everything was accessible at just a click away. The ability to keep track and thorough access of data has always been one of the most important use cases of an EMR system (Jones et al., 2014).
Enhanced patient service quality: Due to the ease of access of data, the EMR allowed the hospital to attend to more patients each day. This not only helped the hospital in a financial point of view, but has also increased the health check-up quality of the patients.
Hurdles to be overcome
The organizational workflow structure needs to be upgraded properly in order to fit in the EMR systems into the daily business of the staffs and the patients. Furthermore, proper tutor manuals and trainings needs to be provided to the users of these systems. As per Khalifa (2013), this is what is lacking in the current working scenario at King Faisal. Furthermore, improved security measures should also be implemented in order to isolate and protect the health records of their thousands of patient (Youssef, 2014).
Conclusion
The above report helps to conclude that the integration of an electronic health record system helps in the process of improving the quality of health services within the spheres of any hospital. In spite of beautifying the health quality of their patients, the EMR also allows the primary stakeholders to manage patient data in an improved manner and hence inspire their services.
