Question:
With company cutbacks, layoffs, and economic uncertainty weighing heavily on everybody, its no wonder some employees are dragging their feet into work. But according to Steven Stein, Toronto-based psychologist and entrepreneur, there are ways to lift and maintain motivation, even in tough times. In Make Your Workplace Great: The 7 Keys to an Emotionally Intelligent Organization, he offers these valuable tips for motivating employees.
Answer:

Motivation of employees is a very important aspect in any organisation. Employee motivation helps in the good performance of the employees. The performance of the employees is what the success of the organisation is dependent on and without proper motivation, the employees would not be able to function in the correct manner (Ganta, 2014). The motivation of employees depends completely on the organisation and the techniques that they use to help the employees to grow and perform better in the organisation. The article mentions several ways that an employee can be motivated such as offering feedback, involving every employee in the decision-making process, being flexible and to others. These suggestions are very effective if conducted by an organisation. However, there are several other ways as well that can help in motivating the employees of an organisation. Communication is a very important factor which helps in motivating employees. Communication between the manager and the employees helps in a clear understanding of the issues that are faced by the employee. In an organisation there are many problems which occur towards the employee which if not solved can lead to many problems such as a fall in the performance of the employee. The organisation needs to take care of this issue (Valencia, 2014). The manager needs to have a communication with the employees if a problem arises on an urgent basis so that it does any have any effect on the work and performance of the employee. The communication needs to be in person and not in virtual form as physical communication has more positive effects than virtual communication. It will help the employees to feel valued and a part of the organisation by being appreciated by the boss.
Another approach that can be taken is creating a positive vibe in the environment. Motivation can also be lacked if the environment of the organisation is not good. To establish a good environment in the workplace it is on the managers to assess the situation of the organisation and the people who work in it. If there is any situation which is causing a bad environment then the manager have to take important steps to change the environment of the organisation. Motivation also lies in the ambience of the workplace. If there is a bland ambience then the employees might not feel the energy to do their work. The manager can place certain motivational quotes and keep certain plants to make the workplace look more lively and serene. The opinion of the employees could also be taken to decorate the office. There could be another approach where the manager dedicates a certain time for fun activities in those times where the work pressure might be a little less (Pinder, 2014). Working continuously could be monotonous for the employees after a certain time especially after a high pressure season where every employee craves for a break from work. The boss could organise certain fun activities where different departments of the organisation can take part together. This will help the employees to freshen up their minds and also create a bond between employees of different department as they would work as a team to win the activities. These approaches along with the ones stated in the case study can help in the motivation of the employees in a workplace.
In my organisation there are different ways that our supervisor motivates the employees. When the pressure of work is less, the supervisor organises small activities such as games and dancing which would help in team bonding. These activities and games are organised once in every two weeks for a duration of two hours where the people gather together in a common place and have fun. This helps to create a positive environment in the workplace. The organisation also has a policy of celebrating occasion and festivals. On these days the employees are allowed to dress up in casual clothes and treats are given to the employees such as sweets. Even though the gesture might be small, it is highly appreciated by all the employees since it gives a chance to relax and have fun along with working on any urgent project. The supervisor also talk personally to the different teams that are under him twice a month and also more if needed to discuss about the work and also to address any issue that might have occurred among the employees (Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2013). Any kind of incident is given urgent attention and no delay is done so there is hardly any effect that occurs on the employees.
In a group work, motivation is highly required as there are a number of people who are working together and clashes might happen among them. The team leader or the supervisor of the team would have to take better care of the team so that no clashes occur and hampers the work. There might be different opinions that the team leaders might have and this can be the major reason for miscommunication in the team (McShane & Von Glinow, 2013). The supervisor has to take the opinion of all the members under consideration and find the best approach that can help in the project. There would also have to be recreational activities in the team which would help the tea members to relax and bond with each other. An interaction session can be initiated where casual conversation would be started which would help to know more about the team members. Moreover, feedbacks can be taken from the team members to realise any issues that they be facing during their work. These should be solved by the supervisor.
Hence, it can be said that motivation is very important for the smooth functioning of the organisation and it can be done with the complete participation of the managers and the supervisors of the organisation. Motivation would be needed by every employee so that they can work efficiently and give their best performance which would help in the success and growth of the organisation. Motivation is therefore the key to the success and progress of every organisation.
