ULO 1: Apply Behavioural Health Science perspectives to psychopathology
ULO 4: Identify appropriate psychosocial interventions in caring for people with major mental health disorders
Causes of behaviour problems and distress are more complex than commonly assumed
Diagnostic criteria best viewed as generalised descriptions, but
MUST BE careful not to reify, label, stereotype as doing so can have unintended negative outcomes for individuals and society as a whole
Behaviours are learnt through an association between an action and a consequence for that action
Reinforcers are anything which increases or strengthens the likelihood of that behaviour
Identify a baseline measure of the problem behaviour, including the frequency, duration, intensity and/or latency of the targeted behaviours. The baseline data must be used as a standard to establish performance criteria and against which to evaluate intervention effectiveness
Identify intervention strategies to be used to alter antecedent events to prevent the occurrence of the behaviour, teach individual alternative and adaptive behaviours to the person, and provide consequences for the targeted inappropriate behaviour(s) and alternative acceptable behaviour(s)

Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) refers to deep relaxation technique that are most commonly used for controlling anxiety and stress, relieving insomnia, and averting symptoms of different kinds of chronic pain.
The PMR technique encompasses a mind-body technique that encompasses slow tensing and relaxing of all the muscles that are present in the body. Significant benefits of PMR can be accredited to the fact that the levels of stress hormone or cortisol get reduced, in response to mental illness and stressful conditions (Chellew et al., 2015). It also benefits the outer hospital domain since it proves useful for conditions that cannot be completely treated by different pharmacological means. Hence, the health costs associated with pharmacological management of mental disorders get substantially reduced, besides allowing the family members and peers take active participation in making the affected individual follow the relaxation steps. Furthermore, the practice can also be performed in a space that is free from any kind of distraction (Vancampfort et al., 2013). This makes it easier for the caregivers to assist the affected person in the recovery process.
Besides reducing stress levels, and triggering the onset of a relaxed mental state, nursing professionals also find it easy to learn, when compared to different pharmacological interventions. Thus. PMR is an effective strategy of treating mental disorders.
