How can you place their arguments in a larger historical, political, or social context?What kind of rhetorical appeals to they make? How do these appeals relate to the appeals made by Fredrick Douglas?What are the limitations of their appeals? What are the counterarguments? Does their advocacy speak to a select group of Americans, or are they widely appealing?Finally, place your movement/protest in the context of larger political or social trends. How is your group’s appeal a response to our contemporary politics?

Introduction:
Gun violence in the United States has led to many debates between the old and young generation. The rise in cases where armed individuals kill people especially in crowds has led to a widespread campaign. These campaigns are mainly aimed at advocating for stringent policies which are needed to curb the acquisition of firearms. A good example is the Parkland Student’s campaign that aims at highlighting the need for tough measures on those issuing their guns or even those that sell them. These campaigns can be equated to the political need for certain interventions in the country such as equal employment opportunities, better healthcare systems or even the historical inclusion of African Americans in the creation of government policies, (Escobar 55). In addition, this becomes a social issue. There are many individuals who are ‘bitter’ with their lives, have psychological disorders or are part of terrorist groups. This calls for the intervention of community members who can be able to identify problems that are faced by certain members of their community. In addition, there are instances where individuals have to prove themselves to their peers and going on a shooting spree can be one way of joining ranks in terror groups.
One method that is being used by Parkland Students is Rallies, Walks and social media which has many participants. Events like these are used to sensitize the communities and other students on issues surrounding gun violence. With the help of advocates fighting for gun control, most rallies are deemed successful. Many students who survive such shootings are able to narrate what they went through and the need to have tough measures on those owning guns, (Simonsen 23). These appeals usually have a close relation to past events that were held by activists such as Fredrick Douglas. Being a famous abolitionist and orator, he was able to champion for the rights of African Americans and those that were still in slavery. In addition, he was instrumental in the support of women suffrage. Being a leader in a society that was not well known, he was able to champion for many rights that were violated. It is this similarity that sheds light on student leaders and their colleagues who fight for their rights in school and in the entire society, (Schattschneider 67).
The use of oratories has limitations. First, public rallies and walks that have been adopted by students cannot be attended to by everyone. Also, these rallies and walks cannot happen every day and after a short time, these stints are forgotten. In most cases, violence erupts thus the need for notifying authorities about such events. It is upon the digression of authorities such as police departments to allow such events or prevent them. In most cases, fears of gun shootings to happen again are recorded hence the small number of participants, (Seixas 35). With the use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, most students, youths and community members can be reached easily. This is a platform that is used by many campaign managers to provide first-hand information about any events around the school or community. As a result, the advocacy groups using these methods are able to reach out to many people within the shortest time.
In a nutshell, students’ protests can be equated to political movements where grievances are raised and addressed. In this case, gun violence and gun control is a major issue that does not only affect students but the entire society. By participating in such protests and movements, authorities are able to heed to the problems and issues being raised, (Dagnino 34). In relation to contemporary politics, movements are essential because they are used as platforms essential for realizing issues such as corruption, inequality, and sexual abuse, the need for better infrastructure, low wages and even insecurity. In some instances, the only means that government officials and leaders can listen to the public is when vices are made public, (Basu 15). In the end, goals are always achieved. In this particular scenario, the call for security measures to be implemented in schools are heeded. Similarly, regulations governing the ownership of guns and their usage are also looked into. In most cases, legislators are given the opportunity of addressing these issues by attending the rallies or providing official statements to the public. It is through such events that victims are able to appreciate their efforts which are awarded by new legislation being enforced or perpetrators being judged according to the law. As such, it is essential to participate in such events which of late seems to be one of the avenues that leaders are able to address pertinent issues in the society.
