Questions:
This assignment is designed to assess students’ knowledge and skills related to the following learning outcomes:
1. Analyse and report on the current and future state of the internetworking infrastructure and its applications.2. Implement a process to support the administration and management of internetworking.
Answer:
Project scope
In this task, we propose a network design to serve a business enterprise. The network proposed will accommodate five departments. The departments are sales, finance sales human resource and admin departments. It is good to note that the network proposed will be implemented on the basis of both functional requirements and user requirements. That is to say, workers of this business enterprise have a say on what they expect the network should perform for them. These information is acquired through user requirements’ collection via either questionnaires or verbally assessing network users [1].
Design Goals/functional requirements
Functional requirements denotes to what a project is expected to do. In this task our functional requirements include but are not limited to:
Departments of human resource, administration and finance should fully be able to access network resources without any kind of hindrances.
Engineering and sales departments should have no access to the finance departments.
Departments of sales and engineering should be able to access print services
Client computers should be issued with IP addresses automatically.
IP addressing should be managed by DHCP.
Non-functional requirements
A non-functional requirements refers to a requirement by which the project that observes how a projects would perform what is expected out of it. That is, non-functional requirements defines the behavior of the system. In our network design project, some of non-functional attributes that will be closely monitored are:
Performance: performance refers to how productive a system can be. Performance measures efficiency and effectiveness of a systems. Our network design is expected to be productive at all times without delays. Throughput will be high.
Availability: availability measures the presence of a system during the when required. It also defines recovery time in case of any kinds of failures. Our network system design being proposed will be always available to support business processes. We expect an uptime of 99.99%.
Scalability: future growth of the network is another non-functional requirement that we that we consider during the construction of our network system. Our design should not hinder future expansion of the network no matter what. At a future date, the network will be expanded without disturbing the current network.
Hardware requirements
For us to put up our proposed network, we require hard ware materials to enable us layout our net. In our network design proposal we consider materials from cisco systems. In case there is no material that Cisco systems cannot supply, we therefore have to source from Dell. The two are selected a reason of their support and warranty attached to their products. In case the two do not supply a material, which is rare, we can go for any other vendor. We are not tied to the two. The following table tabulates hardware item, specification, justification for requirement and finally market price.

IP addressing
IP addressing denotes to the assignment of IP addresses to the computing devices for them to be identified uniquely on the network. It’s good to mention here that there are devices on the network require permanent IP addresses on the network, these are devices whose functionality is defined and at one point, issuance of IP addresses dynamically may disrupt its services at one point. In our network, devices issued with IP addresses manually include but are not limited to servers, wireless APs, and router interfaces. Our IP addressing table is as below table. We will be using class C kind of IP addressing.

Network design (User-Centric Approach)
The network design we are proposing is user centric. That is to say, it is being designed with the user being put in consideration. The network design proposed will not be complex to business’ IT support team. The configurations will be kept simple while the network performs the expected duties. Business’s IT support engineers are not supposed to experience problems during their troubleshoot just in case a fault may occur.
Network description
In our network design proposal, we envision to have, two routers, two wireless access points and five switches. Each of the switches will be supporting each VLAN. The two wireless access points will be deployed to support handheld computing devices. Routers are key to our network as they be performing major task of routing of packets. Additionally, they will be configured to support DHCP function. Furthermore, the routers will be configured with ACLs to provide certain levels of security.
Switch configuration
Access point configuration steps
Before we proceed to configuration guidelines, we have to power the AP and note down the default gateway, username and passcode of the WAP. Assuming we have the mentioned above, follow the below steps:
Connect the AP with your computer using patch code cable.
Access the AP’s web-page setup by typing in the URL the default gateway address, press Enter. In case you are prompted for username and passcode, type admin in both fields.
In web-setup, Click “Wireless”.
Enter the SSID name.
Click on “Wireless Security”, select WPA2-PSK security mode
Type Wi-Fi password in the ”Passphrase” field.
In the “Internet Set-up”, type default gateway address.
Click “Save Settings”. [8]
File sharing server configuration steps
We assume that the server is already installed with windows server 2012 r, file sharing role is installed and the server is powered. Follow the guides below:
Run server manger tool
On the “File and storage”, expand it and select tasks, Click “New share”.
Choose the server, Click Next
Provide share name, click Next
Provide share permissions
Click Create.
Security factor
In our network design, we consider having access lists as tool of security. Access lists are configured on the routers to prevent intrusion into our network system by foreign packets.
Executive summary
In this assignment task, we are proposing a network design for a business enterprise. The proposal is done in Netsim Boson software simulator. The simulation, two routers, five switches, two wireless access points and two servers and client personal computers are used.
Security feature in our network proposal is also not left behind, we are using routers to provide some level of security.
Services such as printing and file sharing services are also a requirement and have been implemented.
