Topic: Effective hand washing practices- Primary prevention/Health promotion

Epidemiological Rationale for Topic (statistics related to topic):
According to statistical reports, an estimated 1.4 million children, aged less than 5 years are found to suffer from pneumonia and diarrhea around the world. Hand washing and effective hand hygiene can help in preventing 1 out of 10 cases of diarrhea associated illnesses and 1 out 6 cases of pneumonia. Both of these diseases account for more than 29% of all children death that accounts for more than 2 million death of children on a global scale. Transmission of infection via contaminated objects and hands play a crucial role in infection spread (Unicef.org, 2018). Improved hand hygiene practices can lead to a reduction in gastrointestinal infection among children by 31% and respiratory infections by 21%. This calls for the need of promoting hand washing practices across schools.

ECBP-4.1 (Healthy People 2020, 2018)
The rationale behind this objective is related to the fact that most young children do not consider hand hygiene as a priority. Thus, good hygiene practices should be incorporated in the school curriculum.
How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives (See page 116 in the textbook)?
The Alma Ata Declaration illustrates on primary health care and promotes education for all prevailing health conditions and the methods that can be applied to prevent or manage them. This is in accordance with HP2020 objective (Labonte et al., 2014).

Behavioral Objective and Domain
Example – Third-grade students will name one healthy food choice in each of the five food groups by the end of the presentation. (Cognitive Domain)

Healthy foods from each group are….Unhealthy foods containing a lot of sugar or fat are….

(label and describe)
Example – Interactive poster presentation of the Food  Pyramid. After an explanation of the poster and each food category, allow students to place pictures of foods on the correct spot on the pyramid. Also, have the class analyze what a child had for lunch by putting names of foods on the poster and discussing what food group still needs to be eaten throughout day.

3. A portrait will a sheet of paper on the face will be made to show a covered mouth. The importance of covering a cough or a sneeze will be explained

4. They will be able to follow the six steps of hand-washing

Following the seven steps effectively removes germs

4. Role play will be conducted where all the steps will be demonstrated in real time

Use of posters, cutting out portraits, flashcards and making videos on the topic involved creativity.
Planned Evaluation of Objectives (Outcome Evaluation):

Their ability to understand why hand-washing is essential- By showing them pictures of practices where germs are spreading and asking if it is right or wrong
They will be able to recognize spread of germs- By showing videos that do not follow hand etiquette and taking feedback
They will demonstrate proper cough etiquette- By making them participate in a skit on hand and hygiene
They will regularly maintain hand hygiene- Participation in the skit

Planned Evaluation of Goal:  
Effectiveness of the teaching plan will be evaluated after three months in the form of an assessment where the students will be required to give practical demonstration
Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher (Process Evaluation):
Using checklists to determine guided activity, independent activity, and take follow-ups

Lack of attention

These will be overcome by asking questions that will make the sessions more engaging. Lessons would be colorful, bright and interactive. Forming a positive community in the classroom to make the students feel comfortable and free and educating on their wellbeing are some other effective strategies.

Introduce each other and motivate them to participate in the discussion to help them focus their attention
Use of simple language
Use of uncomplicated and short sentences
Brief pause between sentences to obtain feedback
Praise all students for effectively following the plan and give some rewards on their success
Non-verbal skills would encompass kinesics such as, shaking the head and nodding, maintaining eye contact, smiling facial expression, warm body language, humour and soft tone of voice.
