Question:
Case Study
Ethical analysis is both a science and an art. As a science, it is not purely theoretical but practical in the sense that one is searching for the right and the good in specific circumstances. As an art, ethical analysis needs to be practiced; it is a skill that can be acquired only by repeatedly performing the unique investigation into the right thing to do. Ethics committees, in particular, practice analysis on mock cases that illustrate different aspects of health care treatment options. Our readers are encouraged to analyze the following case, using the questions as a guide.
Questions to consider in analyzing this case:
• Assumptions are important in ethical analysis. If you do not believe there is such an illness as empacho, how do you relate to the parents of this child?
• What is the ethical dilemma (the class of opposing goods) that you see in this case?
• What treatment would you suggest and how would you relate the reasons for the treatment to the parents?
• Could you justify supporting the decision to bring the grandmother to the United States to apply her remedies? What information would you want to have first?
• Discuss other cultural/religious positions that affect your ordinary delivery of health care. What are the important points to consider when you meet such positions?
Answer:
The case study deals with the ethicality of the tribal or the folk forms of treatments that are commonly being employed by the various tribal folks for the treatment of the diseases or the problems that they commonly face. It is a reflection of this fact that the mother of the Puerto Rican boy inspite of the suggestions of the specialist and the clear signs of the problem of digestion believes that her boy is facing what is commonly known among the tribal people as empacho. Furthermore, instead of having faith on the remedy suggested by the doctor and also the treatment provided by the doctor at the health care center she sends for her mother-in-law who had some past experiences in dealing with such kinds of matters with the help of folk remedies. However, recent researches would indicate the fact that the decision taken by the mother of the boy is wrong since the digestive problem that the boy is suffering from might have serious effects on the health of the boy if not treated properly at the right time (Ying, Markowitz & Yan, 2018). Moreover, it is generally seen that most of the tribal remedies entails the use of superstitious remedies or like kinds for the purpose of treatment that only helps in the mitigation of the immediate symptoms of the disease but does not cures it (Badcott & Wingfield, 2018). Therefore, it would be apt to say that the standpoint taken by the mother is wrong on the grounds of ethics.
The decision taken by the mother of the boy who is suffering from the digestive problem is wrong in terms of the internal coherency as well. The process of internal coherency requires the concerned individual to “engage in collective learning” and also take the help of the relevant facilities to mitigate the issue at hand (Karwowski et al., 2017). Therefore, on the basis of this particular theory the mother of the boy should taken the help of the expertise of the doctor and also the recent treatment facilities available for the cure of the boy rather than solely relying on her mother-in-law and her folk remedies. The same point can be made from the perspective of the practical use approach as well. It is significant to note that the practical use approach requires the individuals to take the help of their practical faculty for the resolution of the issues that they are facing (Payab et al., 2018). However, it is seen that instead of relying on that the mother responds to her irrational self.
In the past it has been seen that the folk or the tribal remedies have helped in the cure of various kinds of diseases as well as illnesses in a significant manner. They have helped in the cure of the illnesses that even the modern system of treatment have been unable to do. Having said this many a times it is seen that the use of folk treatment measures entails with itself various kinds of adverse effects and the majority of the times they are not reliable. Thus, it can be said that the approach adopted by the mother of the boy is to a greater extent wrong.
