Answer:
Introduction
This reports presents my reflection on the design and development of the proposed website for a music production company called Tribute Ltd. The report discusses the design decisions that were made during the design stage of the website and how they have impacted the final design achieved for the website. It also discusses the usability and accessibility aspects of the design and how they fit into the design and finally an evaluation of the design to point out what could be improved in future to improve the design of the website.
Research
A few technologies and languages were used to design the website. The core languages used to design the website are HTML, CSS and JavaScript using Adobe Brackets as the text editor. The final design achieved as a result of using the three languages is quite impressive as it has met all the requirements of the client and the experience of using them for me was good as it helped me improve on my existing skills and also helped me acquire new skills. HTML is easy to understand and use thus using it along with CSS and JavaScript was easy for me. Using CSS made it easy to design the website because I used a common stylesheet for the website thus it was easier to update and maintain the design. Using CSS also helped me achieve consistency in the design thus the website got a themed appearance in all the webpages so that users are able to transition from one page to the other without feeling like they are using different websites. Although JavaScript was not used much in the design of the website, it helped add more functionality to the website. To code, update and maintain the code for the three languages, Adobe Brackets was used. I had the best experience using Adobe Brackets because it’s designed for web design thus there are so many features and options that make it easy to write code as it is crafted for front-end development and web design. Compared to other text editors I have used in the past like Notepad++, Adobe Brackets is my best text editor so far. However for HTML I believe that the code and the design of the website would have significantly improved if HTML5 was used instead. This is because HTML5 helps web designers to write cleaner code by use of elements like section, nav, header among many others. Another technology that would have improved the design and made it easier to design the website is Bootstrap Framework. I believe if Bootstrap was used to design the website, the overall design of the website would have been better compared to the current design. JQuery would have been another great technology to use instead of using JavaScript. JQuery is a library built on top of JavaScript thus it has more features and functionalities implemented as plugins (Tayal, 2014). Using the plugins to design add more interactivity to the website would have made it easier and would have helped me achieve more.
Usability and accessibility
Before commencing on the design of the proposed website, I set a number of goals that the final design of the website should achieve for it to be a success. These goals helped define strategy that I would follow to achieve a usable and accessible website for all users. The goals were based on the core design principles of web design which include;
Purpose- The design of the website should help the website to achieve its purpose meaning that it should be practical and applicable to the problem being solved (Laja, 2018). The proposed website is intended to create an online presence for Tribute Ltd thus when the website is deployed, the design should be able to meet this purpose. Looking at the final design, I can conclude that the final design meets its purpose thus this goal was achieved.
Navigation- Navigation is one of the most important aspects of the usability and accessibility of a website. Without navigation the proposed website would not be usable at all thus this goal was achieved by implementing navigation on every page making the website.
Colours- The colors used to design a website should be selected to make sure that the combination of the colors help create an appealing aesthetic look for the website and also have been used making sure that every element making up the design is visible and accessible (Stickler, 2016). The colors used to design the website were properly selected thus the final design is good and all elements are visible.
Mobile friendly- The final design of the website should be mobile friendly meaning that it should respond and adapt to different screen sizes. This makes it usable across a range of different devices with different screen sizes and resolutions (Mahmood, 2012). Looking at the design this feature could have been achieved easily if Bootstrap was used. Thus this strategy did not work well because the final design is not responsive enough thus significantly reducing usability and accessibility of the website when used in smaller screen devices.
The design principles defined the evaluation criteria that I used to assess whether or not the strategy used to design the website worked or not thus it’s safe to say that the strategy worked although the responsiveness of the website can be improved by use of Bootstrap.
Further enhancements
Having understood the requirements of the client, the final design will meet its purpose and help to create an online presence for the business. However more features can be implemented to make the website even better. Some of these features include adding more interactivity in the website by adding a server side implementation for the website. This will involve implementing a database using MySQL and then using PHP to do all the server processing. Doing this will enable the website to have more features like customer registration and updating of the content in the website using a database. Adding this feature would help customers to do more on the website instead of just getting information about products.
Conclusion
The whole process of designing the website was very informative and stressful when something was not working the way it’s supposed to. However, with the vast resources and tutorials available online I was able to design the website and the final design achieved is accessible and usable thus it meets its requirements.
