Question:
Critically engage with the short reading below from the standpoint of “human transformation in response to perceived ultimacy.” Explain how you understand the meaning of Eve’s encounter with the snake from the perspective of human transformation. What role does the snake play in the larger story of transformation, or the religious life more generally? Compare that with the role/significance of the snake in the selection below. Do you think the positive interpretation of Eve’s ‘disobedient’ action given below brings out something different and important than the standard interpretation? If so, what exactly would this look like if developed further? I have a suggestion on this below regarding the Divine Feminine. Also, consider whether there are any concerns or potential problems with the non-standard interpretation below that might lead one to re-think the interpretation?
Answer:
Introduction:
Eves encounter with the snake explains a lot in human transformation. The woman quotation given in the Garden was slightly different from the one quoted to man (Ferguson, 67).The meaning indicated by Eve is the show of disobedience. The way Eve responded to the snake shows how women are truthful. They believe without a second thought and that’s why the snake convinced the Eve to take the forbidden fruit. The meaning here is that women unless advised on what is wrong they can’t make an appropriate correction. Through this perspective, the transformation of the human being was encountered and that’s why today the world is full of challenges because of the snake.
Snake in this contest plays a number of roles. The symbolism of the snake both through transformation and religion shows one of the oldest rituals which are always associated with humankind. The symbol of the snake in the context is the sign of both good and evil. There a lot of meanings symbolized by the snake (Shipley, 31).Different cultures have a different interpretation of the snake. There are those cultures which believe snakes as a source of guardianship. Serpents are associated with security to the temples and other sacred places within the society. The snakes believed to hold and protect the grounds of sacred places. Also, snakes are being associated as either poison or medicine. There are those cultures which believe snakes as sources of medicine or poison. From the perspective of human transformation, human beings interpret snakes as a source of evil. Eve was convinced by the snake and since that day humans have believed snakes as a source of evil.
On comparing the interpretation of the snake to the standard interpretation one may appeal to the extent of the disobedience. The epistemic injustice has been clearly described by Miranda Fricker. The philosopher argues that testimonial injustice entails the prejudices that target to initiate a deflated level of the credibility to all speakers in the world (Snow, 200).The author has provided an example of a lady who because of his gender has been excluded from the business. Through this case, Flicker has indicated how epistemic injustice is linked to some outcomes within the society. Through this analogy, the aspect of hermeneutical injustice is clearly revealed by the injustice in which someone for our case is linked to her capability capacity. Generally, the epistemic is always associated with a group which is less able to participate in the apt processes that can induce new concepts.
On the positive interpretation of Eve’s scenario we tend to get apt information which compares both standard interpretation and the divine feminine. If one tries to ponder the whole story of disobedient then he or she will be able to come up with an appropriate posture that is different from the standard interpretation. The disobedient revealed by the snake gives positive impacts to the divine feminism. Women realize that they are easiest vessels which can be easily tricked within society (Sumegi, 173).The story of disobedience also tries to lure women to be aware of those epistemic injustice practices which have surrounded the entire world. Through this perspective, then Eve’s disobedience raises an alarm that guides females and males on the forbidden knowledge which when left unhandled can bring trouble to the society.
