Introduction
Do you have many social relationships? Do you consider yourself a sociable person? Or maybe you prefer isolation and spending a lot of time with yourself? We think that there are some things related to the impact of relationships in our health that you should know.Apparently, different studies have shown that happiness and social relationships have a direct correlation, since the perceived happiness increases the levels of sociability and also the quality of social interactions; and these in turn tend to increase the level of happiness (Jha et al., 2016). Research indicates that happy people have a greater quantity and a better quality of family relationships and friendship .
Ethics in the research
The research should show the purpose , procedures and expected duration of the research. The participants have every right to decline and withdraw from the research onece it has started. There should be limits of confidentiality when doing this research.
There have been experiments in which interventions have been made to put people in a happier mood, and it has been proven that these people become more sociable, more willing to help others and more cooperatives. In addition, in this state of happiness, people try to make those around them happier ( Sheperis, Young& Daniels, 2016). So one of the benefits of Facebook is that it provides better social relationships to happy people, as well as those around them.
Why Facebook could be good for your health
It has also been proven in experimental studies in the laboratory, that when people are put in a positive emotional state, they express greater interest in carrying out social and prosocial activities compared to people who have been induced an emotional state (Mulvey,2015). On the other hand, those who have been induced a state of negative emotions indicate less interest in social activities. In such a way that people who are induced a positive emotional state find social activities more reinforcing and rewarding than people who have not been put in this positive state.
To this day, scientists already know that positive social relationships are very beneficial for our health. This occurs because social support has an inverse relationship with stress and depression, which is why it is essential in crisis situations, such as the loss of a job or a divorce.Being able to count on others causes adverse situations to cope or resolve in a more positive way.
In short, social support has beneficial effects for health, since it reduces the likelihood of the appearance and development of various diseases such as coronary or suicidal tendencies. It also enhances security, the sense of belonging to a group and social contact.
How this course is a resource
Social relationships are resource that can be used in health promotion of the population. Social bonds created in Facebook are a resource that must be promoted and protected. Social ties can benefit health beyond own individuals, since they influence the health of others through social networks (Frost & Rickwood, 2017).. Social ties created through Facebook have immediate effects in terms of (health behaviors, mental health) and cumulative long term effects on health (mortality, physical health) and therefore, represent long-term and short term investment opportunities in the health of the population. Our recommendation is that you give rise to situations that you can enjoy in the company of others and also in social media platforms such as Facebook. A conversation in a cafeteria, a walk, a hiking trip or a visit, are activities that can help strengthen social ties and prevent possible future health problems.
A study from the University of Northern California revealed that you can improve your health even when you do not exercise physically. The study suggests that a person’s social relationships directly influence their mortality (Mogul, Nagy & Bridges, 2017).. The data obtained in the study revealed that a person’s social relationships are just as important as their practice of physical exercise. Researchers analyzed blood pressure, waist circumference, inflammation and volume of body mass of the participants. They found that:
Teens and older adults who socialized less had a less healthy life.
In older participants, social isolation caused more harm than diabetes.
However, this does not justify stopping physical exercise. Although social relationships directly influence a person’s health, the benefits of physical activity are very high. Some researchers tell us that an active social life during old age can protect against dementia. Social isolation is a powerful but little understood risk factor for mortality and mobility, and its negative consequences are more important among the elderly, the poor and minorities (Coyne, McDaniel & Stockdale2017).. This is a fact to be taken into account, since there is a growing number of people who live alone and, therefore, are more prone to social isolation.
Conclusion
From all this we can conclude that both the quality and quantity of our social relationships including affect our mental health, our physical health and the risk of mortality. Studies show that social relationships have short- and long-term effects on health, for good and for bad, and that these effects arise in childhood and throughout life to foster cumulative advantage or disadvantage in health.
