Question:
What is distinctive about the historical approach taken by Patrick Joyce in ‘The Journey West’?
Answer:
Patrick Joyce is a historian who writes about the history of social relations and power in Britain and other parts of the world sine the 18th century. He especially works on the nature of liberalism and freedom in the contemporary period. He is a Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh, and an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Mancheste (Vernon, 2016). For more than thirty years Patrick Joyce has questioned orthodoxy in social sciences and history. He has always raised a radical and modern voice debating over the upcoming situation of cultural and social history since the latter half of the 1970s.His research ranges from the class structure in Victorian England to the modern version of the self, freedom and liberalism. Although his works concentrates more on Britain, the impact spreads all over the globe (Goedde, 2018). His book “The Children of Freedom” is a third book of the series of books on power and freedom in British history considering the years after 1945.” The Journey West “is a part of this book.
The work is graphic and highly suggestive about the historical events that it aims to depict. The work starts with the image of men kneeling down on the summit of Croagh Patrick, a site of Christian pilgrimage for over a millennium and a half. The region has been of religious value to the Christian pilgrims. However, there has been historical metaphor in these photographs used by Patrick Joyce in The Journey West (Taylor & Hickey, 2015). The region is located in the fringe region of the European continent, the outer limits of the continent which is not visited much by large part of the population. The name of the photograph is exile which is significant historically as the large part of the population had been exiled. The photographer Josef Koudelka himself was one of the exiles who had fled from Prague after the Russian invasion of 1968. Therefore, the photograph depicts the historical events that changed the course of European lives. The metaphorical photographs question the identity of the stateless people, the people who have no country to call their own. “Koudelka’s photographs probe time as well as space in this pursuit of the in-between.” Whether or not land belongs to a group of people or whether borders separate the people from their roots (Miles, O’Brien & Savage, 2014). The peace that is seen in the faces of the people who returned to their religious roots after a long exile is seen to be reflecting in the faces of the people who kneel down on the land. The region is at the extreme western fringe of Europe which is highly metaphorical and suggests the fringe life of the people who are country less or living in exile.
The land around the people remains barren with no signs of life, only stones and rocks are visible. The particular site is climbed by the pilgrims last Sunday in July. It is said that worship in the place has been continuing since 3000 B.C. It is said that St. Patrick had accomplished the forty-day Lenten ritual of fasting and penance in this place (Joyce, 2014). However the political disturbances and the geographical changes have forced many faithful people to take exile and unable to visit the holy pilgrimage (Notermans, 2016). The subjects taken by Koudelka often seem exposed and isolated.
The later part of the work depicts scenes from Ireland and England and how the people would go about their lives in various settings. The Irish history as stated by the author of the work himself, was not clearly known to them and it was unclear about what are the deviations. As stated by John O’Callaghan “To be brought up as an Irish Catholic in England is to be nurtured as a schizophrenic. … History is the most obvious place to see the effect of being introduced to a background of which I was not the true inheritor” (Gamsa, 2017). History unites and history divides. The historical reflection of the work hence proves the inheritance of the present people who sometimes go through dilemma about calling a country their own. The photograph called “My father, Sean Joyce and myself, Kilbride”, the image depicts the family with a wall behind and the Kilbride Mountain stretches overlooking. The dresses, the background and the overall photograph gives an impression of the contemporary Irish lifestyle. The photograph by Roger Mayne called Southam Street, London, 1957, figure 8 shows a typical Irish house in London. The houses were crammed and there was lesser living space for the people. The work is therefore, a great contribution for the students of history, sociology and for common people too. After having gone through the entire work, one can get a deep insight into the Irish history
